About edinburgh-insider.com...a brainchild born in BavariaThe idea to create a website came at a crossroads in my life. I had been living in Bavaria, Germany for almost 4 years teaching English to people of all ages and backgrounds. There is absolutely no doubt that this job was the best job I’d ever had, even when I had to get up at 5am to teach a company class in the back of beyond! Why Germany...you might be asking. Well, the German language has been a part of my life since high school. I seemed to have a natural talent for it so I decided to study the language at university along with International Business. This was a decision that set about a chain of events which would take my life in a fascinating direction.
Two years later I found myself in Augsburg, a provincial Bavarian city of 250,000 citizens nestled between the rivers Lech and Wertach roughly 60 kilometres west of Munich. This was the city where I would attempt to study International Business with instruction in German. To say this was tough would be an understatement. Especially since I spent a little bit too much time enjoying life’s finer things such as German beer, the Oktoberfest, travelling, meeting inspiring people from all over Europe and camping in the Alps. I’d had such a great time in Augsburg, I decided to move back there after completing my university degree. This time, Augsburg would take on a completely different yet equally captivating appearance. I was no longer a student, I was out there in the big, bad working world and I was responsible for teaching children, teenagers and adults (and scary Chief Executives!) my native language. At the weekend I would have the opportunity to get on a train and head off to one of Bavaria’s countless jaw-droppingly beautiful towns and cities, take photos, meet the locals and often find myself dancing on a bench to cheesy German folk music with a litre of Bavaria’s finest in my hand.
Those 4 years in Bavaria developed my interest in the workings of my native language and my passion for travel and discovery. If only I could find a way to combine my long-standing intrigue for writing and literature with my interest in travel... And so it is 2010 and I am back in Edinburgh with my family and friends. Having been away for so long I have the fortune to gaze upon our magical city with fresh eyes. I want to put my passion for travel, writing and my home town into this website. Craig, this website is dedicated to you and your Gucci wings, in heaven. If you should find yourself in Bavaria, check out Stu's website www.destination-munich.com! He has litre-jugs of info on Bavaria and Munich tourist attractions and plenty of embarrassing photos of himself! For all you English speakers in Germany, Toy Town Germany is a great source of information on English speaking events all over the country. |
