My favourite sites and attractions in Edinburgh

by Kelly Hartman, Germany

Edinburgh offers many fantastic sites and attractions but here are a few that really left a memorable impression upon me that I hope you might enjoy as well.

Calton Hill

In my opinion, the best views of the city can be seen from Calton Hill, which is just east of the new town and not too strenuous of a hike up the step steps.

At the top you can visit Nelson's Monument and Edinburgh's Disgrace, a.k.a, its National Monument. If you enjoy modern architecture as much as me, don't forget to visit the Scottish Parliament Building, located on the southern edge of the hill, as you trek back down.

Greyfriars Bobby's Bar

Just opposite the National Museum of Scotland is Greyfriars Bobby's Bar. A quaint, traditional pub with reasonable prices, tasty sandwiches and great chat, it's nestled just next to the statue of the town's beloved, Bobby.

If you don't know the story of Bobby, here is the quick version. (Dog lovers beware...it is a tear jerker).

The Skye Terrier was a loyal companion to a local policeman, John Grey, who died of tuberculosis in 1858.

His terrier, Bobby, is said to have watched over his grave for the next 14 years until his own death in 1872 and the statue opposite the bar serves in remembrance to the pooch and his unparelled devotion.

The Grassmarket

The Grassmarket, located just southeast of the castle, is one of my favourite places to hang out when I'm in Edinburgh. Cobblestone streets offer up a mix of traditional restaurants and pubs, but also, vibrant and eclectic, artisan boutiques.

The area was once a horse and cattle market, as well as, a square for public executions but is best known today for its shopping and nightlife. Many also recognize the area to house some of the tallest buildings in Edinburgh, boasting some impressive Medieval architecture, too. If you wander into one of the pubs and ask about the story of Maggie Dickson, I guarantee you won't be disappointed...
