The Farmers' Market Edinburgh and the Pink Olive!

by Gillian Lamb, Edinburgh

The Farmers' Market Edinburgh

I have been to the Farmers' Market Edinburgh on Castle Terrace on quite a few Saturday mornings now and the smell is absolutely amazing!

You can buy pretty much anything you would and wouldn't find in your supermarket. Fresh organic fruit and veg, buffalo steaks (which are amazing and better for you than beef), and sorbet and fruit ice made by Belhaven fruit farm.

You can even get your breakfast whilst you are there; fresh organic porridge (which you can buy bags of if you love it that much) or a delicious hog roll with apple sauce from the van owned by Oink of Victoria Street.

Freshly roasted whole hog is pulled off the bone infront of you and it is the juiciest meat you will ever have the pleasure of wolfing down!

The Farmers' Market Edinburgh is located on Castle Terrace just off Lothian Road against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Check their website for more details!

The Pink Olive

Now onto the Pink Olive. This is a tiny restaurant on West Nicholson Street which has a changing and seasonal menu. My parents heard about it from a review in the paper and we decided to go for my brothers birthday dinner.

Me being adverturous with my food, opted for sticky Thai chicken to start. My dessert was a sorbet of green tea and ginger.  I've left what I had for main till last.....BREADED PIG'S CHEEKS! Wow! Absolutely delicious.

Most people I've told have practically gagged when I told them but to be honest it was almost as good as the hog roll from Oink. Perfectly flaky meat which tastes just liked stewed beef.

To be honest I didn't eat much of the breadcrumbs because it was a bit greasy but the meat and the salad it was served with was fantastic!

Would totally recommend these places to anyone who wants to try something a bit different from the usual steak or fish.

The Pink Olive is at 55 West Nicholson Street. A ridiculous number of Lothian Buses head down Nicholson Street so getting there is simple. Get off just after the Festival Theatre. West Nicholson Street branches off Nicholson Street to the right! Check the Pink Olive website for more details!
